[미국 대통령 당선 연설문] Yes we can!

if there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible;
만약 아직도 미국이 모든 것이 가능한 나라라는 것을 의심하는 분들이 있다면,

 who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time;
미국을 건국한 선조들의 꿈이 이 시대에 여전히 살아 있다는 것을 의심하는 분들이 있다면,  

 who still questions the power of our democracy,
그리고 민주주의의 힘을 의심하는 분들이 있다면,

tonight is your answer
오늘이 바로 그 의심들에 대한 답입니다. 

it's the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen;
전에 없이 미국 전역의 학교와 교회 밖으로 길게 늘어섰던 투표소의 줄들도 그에 대한 답입니다. 

by people who watied three hours and four hours, many for the first time in their lives, because they believed that this time must be different, that their voice could be that difference.
많은 사람들이 서너 시간을 기다려 투표에 참여했습니다. 그중에는 태어나서 처음으로 투표에 참여한 사람도 많았습니다, 그들이 그렇게 한 것은 이번만은 달라야 한다고, 이번만은 그들의 목소리로 바꿀 수 있다고 믿었기 때문입니다. 

it's the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Latin, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled
이것은 젊은 사람과 나이 든 사람, 부자와 가난한 사람, 민주당원과 공화당원, 흑인, 백인, 아시아인, 미국 원주민, 동성애자, 이성애자, 장애인과 비장애인들의 답이기도 합니다. 

Americans who sent a message to the world that we have never been a collection of Red States and Blue State;
바로 단 한번도 빨간색 주와 파란색 주로 나뉜 적이 없다는 메시지를 보낸 미국인들 말입니다.

we are, and always will be, the United States of America.
지금도 그렇고 앞으로도 우리는 언제나 미합중국일 것입니다. 

it's the answer that led those who have been told for so long by so many to be cynical, and fearful, and doubtful of what we can achieve to put their hands on the are of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day.
또한 이것은 우리가 역사의 승리를 거머쥘 수 있고, 그래서 더 나은 날을 향해 나아갈 수 있다는  희망에 대해 냉소적이고 두려워하며 의심했던 이의 말에 너무 오랫동안 세뇌당해왔던 사람들로부터 나온 대답이기도 합니다.

it's been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America.
여기까지 정말 긴 여정이었습니다. 하지만 오늘밤, 이 선거에서, 투표 결과가 나온 바로 이 순간, 미국에는 변화가 찾아왔습니다.

I just received a very gracious call from Senator McCain.
방금 매케인 상원의원으로부터 아주 고마운 전화 한 통을 받았습니다.

                자비로우신; 인자하신(국왕·여왕 등에 대하여 일컬음).

He fought long and hard in this campaign, and he's fought even longer and harder for the country he loves.
그는 이번 선거운동을 위해 정말 오랜 시간 동안 열심히 싸워왔습니다. 그는 그가 사랑하는 이 나라를 위해 훨씬 더 오래, 더 열심히 싸웠습니다. 

He has endured sacrifices for America that most of us cannot begin to imagine, and we are better off for the service rendered by this brave and selfless leader.
그는 우리 대부분이 감히 상상도 못할 만큼 미국을 위해 희생해 왔으며, 이렇게 용감하고 이타적인 지도자의 봉사 덕분에 우리는 더 나은 삶을 살고 있습니다. 

I congratulate him and Governor Palin for all they have achieved, and look forward to working with them to renew this nation's promise in the months ahead.

a man /who campaigned from his heart, and spoke for the men and women /he grew up with on the streets of Scranton ... /and rode with on the train home to Delaware,/ the vice president-elect of the United States, Joe Biden.

그는 스크랜튼 거리에서 함께 성장했고, 델라웨어에 있는 집까지 함께 기차를 타고 다닌 남성과 여성들을 대변하기 위해 가슴에서 우러나오는 선거운동을 했던 사람입니다. 바로 미국의 부통령 조 바이든입니다.

 

And I would not be standing here tonight without the unyielding support of my best friend for the last 16 years ... the rock of our family, the love of my life, the nation's next first lady ... Michelle Obama.

저는 이 사람이 없었다면 오늘밤 이 자리에 설 수 없었을 겁니다. 지난 16년동안 굳건하게 저를 지지해준 절친한 친구이자, 바위처럼 단단한 저의 가족, 제 삶을 바쳐 사랑하는 미국의 차기 영부인, 바로 미셸 오바마입니다.

 

Sasha and Malia ... I love you both more than you can imagine. And you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us ...to the new White House.

And while she's no longer with us, I know my grandmother's watching, along with the family that made me who I am.

I miss them tonight.

I was never the likeliest candidate for this office.

저는 대통령 후보가 될 만한 사람이 절대 아니었습니다.

We didn't start with much money or many endorsements.

우리는 넉넉한 자금이나 많은 지지자들을 확보하고 선거운동을 시작한 것은 아니었습니다.

Our campaign was not hatched in the halls of Washington.

우리의 선거운동은 워싱턴의 공공건물에서 시작되지도 않았습니다.

It began in the backyards of Des Moines and the living rooms of Concord and the front porches of Charleston.

디모인의 뒤뜰에서, 콩코드의 거실에서, 그리고 찰스턴의 앞 베란다에서 시작됐습니다.

 

It was built by working men and women who dug into what little savings they had to give $5 and $10 and $20 to the cause.

이 선거운동은 수많은 남녀 근로자들에 의해 완성되었습니다. 그 분들은 선거운동의 대의를 위해 적은 액수지만 5불,10불, 20불을 기꺼이 기부했습니다.

It grew strength from the young people who rejected the myth of their generation's apathy

and from the millions of Americans who volunteered and organized and proved that more than two centuries later a government of the people, by the people, and for the people has not perished from the Earth.

I know you didn't do this just to win an election And I know you didn't do it for me.

저는 여러분이 그저 선거에서 이기기위해, 그리고 저만을 위해 그렇게 행동했던게 아니라는 것을 알고 있습니다.

You did it because you understand the enormity of the task that lies ahead.

여러분은 우리 앞에 놓인 과제가 얼마나 크고 중요한 것인지 이해하고 있었기 때문에 그렇게 행동했던 것입니다.

For even as we celebrate tonight, we know the challenges that tomorrow will bring are the greatest of our lifetime

오늘밤 이렇게  축하하는 동안에도, 내일부터 닥쳐올 도전이 우리 생애 가장 커다란 것임을 알고 잇습니다.

- two wars, a planet in peril, the worst financial crisis in a century.

두개의 전쟁, 위험에 빠진 지구, 100년 만에 불어닥친 최악의 경제위기 말입니다.

Even as we stand here tonight, we know there are brave Americans waking up in the deserts of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan to risk their lives for us.

오늘밤 우리가 여기 서 있는 이 순간에도, 이라크 사막에서 아프가니스탄 산맥에서 용감한 미군들이 우리를 위해 잠들지 않고 있음을 알고 있습니다.

There are mothers and fathers who will lie awake after the children fall asleep and wonder how they'll make the mortgage or pay their doctors' bills or save enough for college.

아이들이 잠든 후에도 잠들지 못한 채 누워, 대출금을 어떻게 갚을 것인지, 병원비는 어떻게 마련한 것인지, 아이들의 대학 등록금을 위해 저축은 어떻게 할 것인지를 고민하는 아버지와 어머니들도 있습니다.

There's new energy to harness, new jobs to be created, new schools to build, and threats to meet and alliances to repair.

 만들어내야 할 새로운 자원이 있으며, 창출해내야할 새로운 일자리도 있으며, 세워야할 새로운 학교도 있으며, 직면한 위협은 물론 재구축해야 할 동맹관계도 있습니다.

 

The road ahead will be long.

갈 길은 멀 것입니다.

Our climb will be steep.

우리가 오르는 길은 가파를 것입니다.

We may not get there in one year or even in one term.

우리는 1년 안에, 심지어 제 첫 임기 안에 그곳에 다다를 수 없을지도 모릅니다.

But, America, I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there.

I promise you, - we as a people will get there.

그러나 오늘 밤처럼, 우리가 그곳에 다다르리라는 희망으로 가득했던 날은 없었습니다. 저는 약속드립니다. 우리 미국 국민은 그곳에 다다를 것입니다.

 

There will be setbacks and false starts.

가다보면 후퇴도 하고, 잘못된 출발도 할 것입니다.

There are many who won't agree with every decision or policy I make as president.

대통령으로서 제가 내린 모든 결정이나 정책을 전부 동의하지는 않을 분들도 많을 것입니다.

And we know the government can't solve every problem.

우리는 정부가 모든 문제를 해결해줄 수 없다는 것을 알고있습니다.

But I will always be honest with you about the challenges we face.

하지만 저는 우리가 직면한 문제에 대해 국민 여러분께 언제나 정직할 것을 약속 드립니다.

I will listen to you, especially when we disagree.

특히나 의견이 다를 때, 여러분의 말씀에 귀 기울이겠습니다.

And, above all, I will ask you to join in the work of remaking this nation, the only way it's been done in America for 221 years - block by block, brick by brick, calloused hand by calloused hand.

그리고 무엇보다, 이나라를 재건하기 위해 여러분의 참여를 요청드릴 것입니다. 221년 동안 미국에서 목재 하나하나, 벽돌 하나하나, 거친 손 하나하나로 이루어냈던 유일한 방법으로 말입니다.

 

What began 21 months ago in the depths of winter cannot end on this autumn night.
21개월 전, 한겨울에 시작한 일이 오늘 이 가을밤에 끝나서는 안됩니다.

This victory alone is not the change we seek.

오늘의 승리만으로는 우리가 추구하는 변화를 이룰 수 없습니다.

It is only the chance for us to make that change.

오늘은 단지 변화를 만들 수 있는 기회일 뿐입니다.

And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things were.

그리고 예전에 하던 방식 그대로 돌아간다면 변화는 일어날 수 없습니다.

It can't happen without you.

여러분 없이는 변화를 일으킬 수 없습니다.

 

So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism, of responsibility, where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves but each other.

새로운 애국의 정신을 불러일으킵시다. 우리 각자가 기여하고 열심히 일하며, 우리 자신뿐 아니라 서로를 돌보는 봉사정신과 책임감으로부터 비롯된 애국심 말입니다.

 

Let us remember that, if this financial crisis taught us anything, it's that we cannot have a thriving Wall Street while Main Street suffers.

이번 금융위기를 통해 우리가 얻은 것이 있다면, 그건 바로 소도시가 고통받을 때 월스트리트 또한 번영할 수 없다는 사실일 것입니다.

In this country, we rise or fall as one nation, as one people.

이 나라에서, 우리는 하나의 국가, 하나의 국민으로 흥망성쇠를 함께하는 것입니다.

 

Let's resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long.

오랫동안 우리 정치계에 해악을 끼쳤던 당파싸움과 옹졸함, 미성숙함으로 다시 돌아가지 않도록 저항합시다.

Let's remember that it was a man from this state who first carried the banner of the Republican Party to the White House, a party founded on the values of self-reliance and individual liberty and national unity.

자기 자신에 대한 믿음, 개인의 자유, 그리고 국가의 통합이라는 이념 아래 만들어진 공화당의 배너를 걸고, 이 주 출신으로는 처음으로 백악관에 입성했던 그를 기억합시다.

Those are values that we all share.

And while the Democratic Party has won a great victory tonight,

we do so with a measure of humility and determination to heal the divides that have held back our progress.

우리는 여전히 그 이념들을 공유하고 있으며, 민주당이 큰 승리를 거둔 오늘밤에도, 지금까지 우리의 번영을 막았던 분열을 치유할 겸손과 의지를 가지고 우리는 해낼 것입니다.

As Lincoln said to a nation far more divided than ours,

지금 우리보다 훨씬 더 분열되었던 국가를 향해 링컨은 말했습니다.

"we are not enemies but friends. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection."

"우리는 적이 아니라, 친구입니다. 비록 열정이 한껏 치밀더라도, 우리가 지닌 애정의 유대가 끊어져서는 안 됩니다."

And to those Americans whose support I have yet to earn,

I may not have won your vote tonight,

but I hear your voices.

그리고 제가 아직 지지를 받지 못한 미국인 여러분께 말씀드립니다.

제가 여러분의 표를 얻지는 못했지만.

여러분의 목소리에 귀 기울이고 있습니다.

I need your help.

And to all those watching tonight from beyond our shores, from parliaments and palaces, to those who are huddled around radios in the forgotten corners of the world,

our stories are singular, but our destiny is shared, and a new dawn of American leadership is at hand.

To those - to those who would tear the world down: We will defeat you.

To those who seek peace and security: We support you.

And to all those who have wondered if America's beacon still burns as bright:

Tonight we proved once more that the true strength of our nation comes not from the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity and unyielding hope.

오늘 밤 우리는 다시 한번 증명했습니다. 우리나라의 진정한 힘은 군사력이나 부의 규모가 아닌, 우리가 품은 이상의 지속적인 힘, 즉 민주주의, 자유, 기회, 그리고 굴복하지 않는 희망에서 비롯된다는 것을 말입니다.

 

For that is the true genius of America: that America can change.

이것이 바로 미국이 지닌 징전한 비범함입니다. 미국은 변화할 수 있다는 것 말입니다.

Our union can be perfected.

우리는 일치단결하여 완벽해질 수 있습니다.

What we've already achieved gives us hope for what we can and must achieve tomorrow.

그리고 지금까지 우리가 이룬 것들이 우리가 내일 무엇을 할 수 있으며, 무엇을 이룰 수 있는지에 대한 희망을 줍니다.

 

This election had many firsts and many stories that will be told for generations.

이번 선거에는 '최초'로 기록될 사항이 많았습니다. 다음 세대에게 들려줄 이야기도 많습니다.

But one that's on my mind tonight's about a woman who cast her ballot in Atlanta.

하지만 오늘밤 제 마음에 남아있는 한 가지 사연은, 애틀랜타에서 투표권을 행사한 한 여성에 대한 이야기 입니다.

She's a lot like the millions of others who stood in line to make their voice heard in this election except for one thing: Ann Nixon Cooper is 106 years old.

그녀는 딱 한 가지를 제외하면, 투표권을 행사하기 위해 길게 줄을 섰던 수백만의 다른 투표자들과 다를 것이 없습니다. 앤 닉슨 쿠퍼 그녀는 106세입니다.

 

She was born just a generation past slavery;

그녀는 노예제도가 폐지된 바로 다음 세대에 태어났습니다.

a time when there were no cars on the road or planes in the sky;

자동차도, 비행기도 없던 시절입니다.

when someone like her couldn't vote for two reasons - because she was a woman and because of the color of her skin.

And tonight, I think about all that she's seen throughout her century in America - the heartache and the hope; the struggle and the progress; the times we were told that we can't, and the people who pressed on with that American creed: Yes we can.

그리고 오늘 밤, 저는 그녀가 한 세기를 지내면서 미국에서 본 모든것들에 대해 생각합니다. 상심과 희망, 분투와 진보를 말입니다.

우리는 할 수 없다는 말을 들었던 시절과 미국인이라는 신념으로 정면돌파한 사람들에 대해 생각합니다. 그렇습니다. 우리는 할 수 있습니다.

 

At a time when women's voices were silenced and their hopes dismissed, she lived to see them stand up and speak out and reach for the ballot. Yes we can.

침묵을 강요당하여 여성들의 희망이 좌절되었던 시절, 그녀는 여성들이 일어나 목소리를 높이고 투표소로 향하던 광경을 볼 수 있을때까지 살아남았습니다. 그렇습니다. 우리는 할 수 있습니다.

 

When there was despair in the dust bowl and depression across the land, she saw a nation conquer fear itself with a New Deal, new jobs, a new sense of common purpose. Yes we can.

황진지대에 절망이 가득하고 대공황이 나라 전체를 휩쓸었을 때, 그녀는 공공의 목적이라는 새로운 개념으로 충만한 뉴딜정책 덕분에 많은 일자리가 생겨나, 나라 전체에 내재된 두려움이 사라진 것을 보았습니다. 그렇습니다. 우리는 할 수 있습니다.

 

When the bombs fell on our harbor and tyranny threatened the world, she was there to witness a generation rise to greatness and a democracy was saved. Yes we can.

진주만에 폭탄이 떨어지고 군국주의가 세계를 위협할 때, 그녀는 한 세대가 위대함으로 분연히 떨쳐 일어나 민주주의를 구원하는 광경을 목격했습니다. 그렇습니다. 우리는 할 수 있습니다.

 

She was there for the buses in Montgomery, the hoses in Birmingham, a bridge in Selma, and a preacher from Atlanta who told a people that We Shall Overcome. Yes we can.

그녀는 몽고메리에서 버스를 타고 있었고, 버밍엄에서 물대포를 맞았으며, 셀마의 다리 위에 있었습니다. 그리고 그녀는 애틀랜타 출신 목회자가 "우리는 반드시 극복하리라" 하고 사람들에게 말하는 것을 보았습니다. 그렇습니다. 우리는 할 수 있습니다.

 

A man touched down on the moon, a wall came down in Berlin, a world was connected by our own science and imagination. And this year, in this election, she touched her finger to a screen, and cast her vote, because after 106 years in America, through the best of times and the darkest of hours, she knows how America can change. Yes we can.

인간이 달에 착륙하고, 베를린 장벽이 무너지고, 과학과 상상력으로 우리는 하나로 연결되었습니다. 그리고 올해, 이번 선거에서, 그녀는 스크린에 손을 대고 투표를 했습니다. 106년동안 미국이 희망에 넘쳤던 최고의 시간과 가장 어두웠던 시간을 모두 목격했던 그녀는, 미국이 변화할 수 있다는 것을 알았기 때문입니다. 그렇습니다, 우리는 할 수 있습니다.

 

America, we have come so far. We have seen so much. But there is so much more to do. So tonight, let us ask ourselves - if our children should live to see the next century; if my daughters should be so lucky to live as long as Ann Nixon Cooper, what change will they see? What progress will we have made?

미국이여, 우리는 여기까지 왔습니다. 우리는 너무나 많은 것을 봤습니다. 하지만 해야 할 일이 훨씬 더 많습니다. 그러니 오늘밤, 우리 스스로에게 물어봅시다. 만약 우리 자녀들이 살아서 다음 세기를 보게 된다면, 만약 제 딸이 정말 운이 좋아 앤 닉슨 쿠퍼 할머니처럼 오래 살 수 있다면, 과연 그들은 어떤 변화를 보게 될까요? 우리는 어떤 진보를 만들었을까요?

This is our time, to put our people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids;

지금은 우리 국민을 일터로 복귀시키고 우리 아이들을 위해 기회의 문을 활짝 열 시간입니다.

to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace;

번영을 회복하고, 평화의 대의를 촉진시킬 시간입니다.

to reclaim the American dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth, that, out of many, we are one;

아메리칸 드림을 되찾고 무엇보다, 우리는 결국 하나라는 근본적인 진실을 다시 확인해야 하는 시간입니다.

that while we breathe, we hope. And where we are met with cynicism and doubts and those who tell us that we can't, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people:

숨 쉬는 동안 우리는 희망을 품는다는 회의와 의심을 만났을 때, 할 수 없다고 말하는 이들과 만났을 때, 우리는 국민의 정신이 한데 모인 영원불멸의 신념으로 응답할 것입니다.
